What is bunchberry?
Bunchberry, also called Canadian dwarf cornel, is very common in Québec's coniferous forests. This North American perennial produces pretty cream-white flowers. Its berries are edible and well liked in tarts, puddings and jams, or simply eaten raw. The plant can be infused, and some smoke the leaves like tobacco.
How do you use bunchberry?
As an infusion, alone or blended with other northern plants, for a tea with deep, comforting aromas. It also works in cooking, giving sauces and desserts a distinctive forest note. Traditionally it is also used in steam baths or as a decoction, valued for its calming scent and its effect on the skin.
Son milieu naturel
Bunchberry makes excellent dense ground cover, a good dark green and easy to grow as long as there is moisture. It takes almost any soil, acid or neutral, grows in full sun or part shade, and is not troubled by frost.
It flowers from early summer until late autumn. There is no need to worry about male and female plants for fruit: the species is hermaphrodite, carrying both on the same plant.
