What is black elder?

Elder was once known as "the country people's medicine chest". Popular in Europe, its berries and flowers are used in herbalism, fine cooking and alternative medicine. Our elderflowers are carefully hand-picked and dried in the shade to preserve their quality and their properties.

How do you use elderflowers?

1. En tisane : You can infuse them alone for a clean flavour, or build your own blend around your favourite loose plants.
   
   
2. In cooking : There are countless uses — take it where you want. They lift jams, jellies, compotes, tarts and desserts, and make excellent syrups for cocktails and lemonades.
   The flowers are also used commercially to flavour sparkling wines, premium tonics, teas, syrups and other drinks.
   
   
3. En herboristerie : In modern herbalism the flowers are the main part used. According to the monographs of the German Commission E, a recognised body for research and guidance on herbal medicine, black elder helps with coughs, bronchitis, fever and colds.
   An infusion of the dried flowers is also said to act as a tonic, an expectorant and a diuretic.
   It can also be used externally, as a poultice to reduce inflammation and ease pain, or as an ointment to soothe burns and scalds.
