What are raspberry leaves?

The raspberry is a perennial that grows wild in Québec. Its leaves are known for a range of benefits for women's health and for health generally. They are used for digestive complaints such as indigestion, and to ease sore throats.

How do you use raspberry leaves?

  1. Infusion : the most common way is as a tea. Add roughly a tablespoon of dried raspberry leaves to a cup of hot water. Steep for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain and drink. It is often taken for digestive and women's health benefits.

  2. Decoction : to draw out more, boil the leaves in water for around 10 to 15 minutes, then strain and drink.

  3. In herbal blends : the dried leaves can be added to other plants in a blend — chamomile, mint or lavender — to build on both the benefits and the flavour.

More on this

This is an ingredient particularly associated with women's health. Raspberry leaves are rich in iron, vitamins C and E, calcium, potassium, minerals and folic acid.

Raspberry leaves are well regarded for hormonal balance and for regulating the menstrual cycle, both useful before pregnancy. The plant also has an antispasmodic effect on the uterine muscles, which helps with painful periods.

Its toning effect is also traditionally associated with childbirth, through its action on the uterus during labour. Some women use these leaves during pregnancy, but it is best to discuss it with a doctor first. The leaves are also used to ease symptoms of menopause.
