Almost everyone says they would rather buy Canadian. Almost nobody can tell, standing in front of a search result, whether they are about to.
That is the whole problem. A maple leaf on a box is a graphic, not a fact. A company can be headquartered in Toronto and make everything overseas. Another can manufacture in a workshop two hours from you and never say so anywhere a shopper would look. The word "Canadian" is doing at least four different jobs across any given page of search results, and the shopper is left to guess which one is in play.
Bunchberry exists to do that guessing in advance, once, properly, so nobody has to do it at the moment of buying.
What that means in practice
Every brand here clears three gates before it is listed: it is incorporated in Canada and majority Canadian-owned, its orders leave a Canadian address, and it makes or designs what it sells. We check the corporate registry rather than the marketing, we look at where parcels physically ship from, we talk to the founder, and we place a test order.
Then every product carries one of three labels — Product of Canada, Made in Canada, or Canadian Company — borrowed from the Competition Bureau's own definitions rather than invented by us. The label appears on the card, on the product page and in the cart, and it is read from the brand's verified record rather than typed in by hand. A Canadian company that manufactures abroad is listed as exactly that. It never gets to wear Made in Canada.
We say no a lot. That is the point. A shelf that accepts everything tells you nothing.
One cart, many makers
Every brand here ships its own orders from its own place. You buy across as many of them as you like in a single cart and pay once; the parcels arrive separately, because they are coming from separate workshops in separate towns. That is not a compromise we are apologising for. It is what buying direct from a lot of small Canadian businesses actually looks like, and we would rather show it than hide it behind a warehouse.
We are an independent Canadian company based in Victoria, British Columbia. We are not a marketplace that will sell you anything. We are a shelf with a standard, and the standard is public.
